Although a digital camera with built-in projector is still pretty gadgety, Nikon’s newest projector camera, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj, has something extra to offer. The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is the successor to the Nikon S1000pj. This model was the first digital compact camera with a built-in projector with which it is possible to project photos and videos onto a flat surface. In itself this is a very clever achievement, but for the wider public the phenomenon remained unknown, or it was just too much of a gadget for the average user. Of course it also comes with a price, which will undoubtedly play a role in the acquisition of such a camera with gadget function.

One of the biggest differences between the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector camera and its predecessor is the achievement at the level of the projector. With 14 lumens, the light gain of the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector is 40% higher than that of its predecessor, so that it is possible to use the projector even in lit spaces. Of course the projection surface remains restricted, but for small presentations or within a small group of friends it works surprisingly well. Of course the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj has also had a megapixel upgrade. While the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj sufficed with 12 Megapixels, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj carries on with a 14 Megapixel CCD sensor. This is a typical marketing choice, as extra image quality cannot be expected from these two extra Megapixels. The optical zoom lens has remained the same and has a focal range of 28-140 mm (5x optical zoom) and a brightness of f/3.9-5.8. To reduce movement blur due to handheld photography, the Nikon Coolpix S1100pj is equipped with an optical and electronic stabilizer.

The new Nikon Coolpix S1100pj camera’s design has undergone small changes. The new Nikon compact camera has fairly round lines and has an internal zoom lens so that the whole is relatively flat. The front of the camera is now smoother, and except for the extra opening for the projector, does not betray that it is a projector camera. The design is more playful, as the finishing around the lens and the projector are rounder instead of the square, sleek lines of its predecessor. The video projection is unaltered in terms of resolution, VGA (640x480 pixels), but the higher amount of brightness notably improves the display. The size of the display lies between 12.7 cm and 119 cm (5-47 inches), whereby the necessary distance to a projection surface is 0.26 to 4 m. According to the official numbers that Nikon has released, the battery capacity of about 1 hour has remained the same as its predecessor.

The back of the Nikon Coolpix camera has also been worked on. The multi-control button has disappeared and it has been replaced with a touchscreen. While the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj was equipped with a 2.7-inch 230.000 pixel LCD, the Nikon S1100pj offers a high resolution, 460.000 dots 3-inch format touchscreen. This is an improvement in terms of ergonomics. The Nikon Coolpix S1100pj projector camera is also comfortable to handle, despite the fact that there is no true hand grip.

The extension of the type of memory card for storage is new for Nikon. With the support of SDXC cards, Nikon is joining other manufacturers such as Canon and Panasonic that have already brought out the first cameras onto the market with SDXC support from the start of this year. At this moment, SDXC hardly plays an important role, but it is expected that due to the rise of 3D, Full HD video and the ever-increasing file sizes, the demand for higher capacities will increase as well. SDXC starts at 48GB and will continue to expand in the coming years to an impressive 2TB in storage capacity. Read the full Nikon Coolpix S1100PJ review at LetsGoDigital.
