Sony Alpha DSLR review - Photokina 2010 report - Prior to the Press event where Sony introduced their latest series of Alpha cameras I was able to shoot with the new Sony A55 camera. The Sony A55 is of most interest to us as this Alpha camera is packed with features that are the most recent and innovative ones. It happens that the Sony Alpha 55 is the first Alpha camera with Translucent Mirror technology. Such a technique gives the engineers great advantages like real-time video image preview via the electronic viewfinder or via the high resolution 3-inch display - in contrast with DSLR cameras where the raised mirror prevents light from reaching the optical viewfinder during video shooting.

Translucent Mirror Technology overcomes other traditional limitations of DSLR models, with its simplified mechanical design shrinking camera size and complexity. Compared to the ‘older’ generation of Alpha camera the differences are remarkable. The fast action mode stands for an impressive speed of 10 fps. For an interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C size sensor these figures are impressive to say the least. Other interesting new or improved features are a new Exmor APS HD CMOS-sensor with 16.2 Megapixels, AVCHD Full HF 1920x1080i video mode, built-in GPS, 3D Sweep Panorama, SteadyShot Inside, en electronic viewfinder with 1.15 Megapixels and a new 15-point AF-system. Impressive to say the least!

We captured the first test photos with the Sony A55 in Disneyland Paris, France, and it was there where we handled this new Alpha for the first time. The number of creative settings is numerous and these published test shots are really the first of a long batch of shots. We have to inform you that the firmware of the Sony A55 camera was not final yet, so these test pictures do not represent the final image quality.

The Sony A55 test photos are made with a pre-production camera which means that this Sony Alpha digital camera is not equal to the model that the consumer can expect to purchase. Follow the link for Sony A55 sample photos.
