Gold versions of various mobile phone brands and models are being sold. In addition, Continental Mobiles offer various mobile phones with embedded diamonds. All purchases are delivered with a so-called 'Gold Card', which stands for the exclusively British manufacturing of the product. Even though the Apple iPhone in itself is already a unique device, the combination with the additions of Continental Mobiles ensures that you, as a user, are guaranteed not to meet a similar device.

Panasonic Lumix TZ5 review

Compact cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 are very much appreciated, and that is for a reason. A camera of this format, equipped with a 10x optical zoom is liked by the majority of the consumers. Of course it is very convenient to have a camera with this zoom range at hand. Life is all about ease! Besides the 10x zoom, the Panasonic TZ5 features optical image stabilisation which certainly improves the quality. And have I mentioned the 28mm wide angle yet?

Samsung Armani camera phone review

Not only is the Giorgio Armani mobile phone a stylish device, it is also delivered in style. The black box has a silky feel, like the cover of the user’s guide. A leather pouch that folds out comes with the cell phone to protect it. When you shut the cover, it shuts down the cell phone. You can also choose to use the included pouch made from soft material. Naturally a battery charger, USB cable, earphone and software CDs are included in the box. An original addition is the soft cleansing cloth, marked with the Armani logo, which serves to wipe the Samsung Armani clean.

Canon EOS 450D Review

The latest Canon DSLR is called Canon EOS 450D, and will be put on the market beside the EOS 400D. The SLR cameras look like twins. Canon have kept all the good things of the EOS 400D, whilst adding new ones to it. Naturally the Canon EOS 450D works seamlessly with the EF-S lenses. These were developed especially for the APS-C format of the image sensor, resulting in a cheaper and more compact lens. Together with the compact body, the Canon 450D is the ideal set to use on holiday where usually lots of photographs are taken.

When you are offered the opportunity to work with the latest digital equipment on a location you will probably never visit again; you do not have to think twice! I am talking about an invitation from Canon Europe on a press trip to Kenya with a number of colleagues from the Netherlands and many other countries. No less than 80 journalists from Europe, among them four colleagues from the Netherlands, were flown to Nairobi, Kenya, at the invitation of Canon. In Nairobi small groups were formed to fly to the Borana ranch in the Laikipia area, north of Nairobi and situated by the Mount Kenya. The Canon EOS Safari trip coincided with 20 years of EOS; a unique memorable moment in the digital world!

The excitement over the Apple iPhone has settled down again. Touch screen phones are slowly gaining popularity and almost every brand offers a touch screen telephone in their assortment. In the beginning touch screens were too sensitive and hard to use. HTC has a lot of experience in the touch screen mobile phone segment. The HTC TyTN, HTC P4350 en de HTC P3600 are some examples of the HTC touch screen Smartphones.

Sony Alpha A700

The new Sony Alpha A700 was launched during a Sony press conference in Italy. Unfortunately, the surprise element was lost because one day earlier the Alpha introduction was disturbed by a leak caused by Sony. The Sony Alpha 700 is Sony’s second digital SLR camera that has to contribute to a continuously compiling series of SLR cameras, with which Sony manifests itself as renowned DSLR manufacturer. The Sony Alpha DSLR A700 is a digital SLR camera which is positioned in the middle segment, and with that, has to compete (heavily) with the new collection of Canon and Nikon D-SLR cameras, among others. During my stay in Italy, I had the chance to work with the Sony A700 for a short period.

Canon introduces its latest digital SLR for advanced amateurs and semi-professionals: the Canon EOS 40D. With a 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, 6.5 frames per second burst performance, a newly developed AF system and 3.0” LCD with Live View mode, the Canon EOS 40D makes significant advances in both performance and versatility. The Canon 40D camera benefits from the new EOS technology platform introduced earlier this year with the professional EOS‑1D Mark III. Canon’s DIGIC III processor delivers responsive operation, improved color rendering and near-instant start-up time. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System combats sensor dust, while a strong magnesium alloy body with weather resistance ensures lasting durability.

Ricoh Caplio GX100 review

Many photographers dream of a compact digital camera with a fine zoom range, including a true wide-angle, one that gives a high resolution and can also store images in RAW. Until recently this remained just a dream. But fortunately there is the opinionated Ricoh, who seems to make the dream come true. With the DIWA Gold Award rewarded GR Digital, Ricoh already has an exceptional camera with a fine wide-angle and RAW support. The Ricoh Caplio GX100 takes it a step further: more wide-angle, more pixels and an optical zoom including image stabilization. What more can a photographer ask for? We have tested the Ricoh Caplio GX100 in our test lab, to explore if the camera truly lives up to the expectations.

When testing the Nikon Coolpix P5000 digital compact camera, I took it along when I visited a piece of Dutch railway history, the Railway museum in Utrecht. The Railway museum is located in the Maliebaan station and gives visitors a glimpse of the past. Most of the test pictures were taken inside the railway museum, including a large depot where diverse old trains stand established. The lighting conditions were full of contrast ; darkness between the trains with spots of sunlight from the roof here and there. Although the Nikon Coolpix P5000 compact camera has an optical image stabilizer, I had to use a high ISO regularly to achieve the desired shutter speed or aperture.

The new Nikon CoolPix S500 digital camera was officially introduced at the start of 2007, just before the opening of the PMA Show in Las Vegas. The Nikon Coolpix S500 offers a resolution of 7.1 effective Megapixels, an advanced in-camera image processing and a 3x optical zoom lens (range of 35-105mm on 35mm camera). The Nikon CoolPix S500 powers up in a quick 0.8 seconds and has a practically imperceptible shutter release time lag of less than 0.005 seconds. Interesting specifications packed in a very compact and solid housing and most of all fully automatic operation.

The new Casio Exilim EX-V7 was officially introduced at the start of 2007, and has been available quite recently. At the moment the Casio EX-V7 is the only line of Exilim camera with a 7x optical zoom lens. This is also its unique characteristic, as even with the 7x optical zoom, it maintains its slim, compact form. Additionally, the Casio Exilim EX-V7 has a CCD stabiliser system, and a new processor: the Exilim Engine 2.0. Casio is one of the pioneers of the digital camera market and is outstanding for integrating innovative image solutions in its compact cameras.

Canon EOS 400D review

Three years ago, Canon shocked the camera market with the introduction of the 8 Megapixel EOS 300D. It was a price breakthrough that would prove very important for the DSLR market. Suddenly, a digital SLR camera had become available for the novice photographer. And things didn't end there; since this event, digital SLR models have been in high demand. After a year and a half, Canon introduced the EOS 350D, which easily matched the success of its predecessor. It was a pretty safe bet that the successor of the EOS 350D would once again follow a year and a half later. Such was indeed the case. Canon's latest DSLR camera, the successor of the EOS 350D, turns out to be the Canon EOS 400D, a ten Megapixel model.

Nikon's newest weapon is the D40, and Nikon is using it to raise the stakes. The Nikon D40 DSLR is primarily meant for consumers who want more than a compact camera. In the profile of the target group, Nikon sees a family person between 30 and 70 years old. The typical user of the Nikon D40 is looking for a camera that stimulates creative qualities and reacts quicker than a compact camera.

While preparing the Photokina tour some of us talked about Micron and its line of sensor solutions. So after informing about Micron's activities we decided to set up a brief Q & A session with Suresh Venkatraman, director of Marketing Micron Imaging and Paul Clark, Regional Communications Manager Europe. And already after some minutes it was obvious that this company was not just playing around in the digital imaging market. It has actually come up wit great innovative ideas and a lot of Micron products we already got acquainted to; like the image sensors for camphones. What about high-speed recording? Not with 30 frames a sec., but what the heck… 5000 frames a second? The Micron guys showed us an amazing demonstration, impressive!

One of the surprises of the Photokina 2006 was Leica. And beside an interesting introduction of the compact camera series, and a digital SLR camera Leica unveiled their digital M camera; the Leica M8. The Leica M8 offers a resolution of 10.3 megapixels and incorporates a notably low-noise CCD image sensor has been rigorously optimized for the special features of the Leica M lens system. The special design of the viewfinder camera with no mirror box allows the typically compact and flat shape of the Leica M to be retained. The small focal length extension factor of 1.33 enables creative freedom even in digital Leica M Photography. We discussed the new Leica M8 with Michael Agel, Press + Public relations of Leica.

It has been a while since we last spoke with Kazuto Yamaki, Chief Operating Officer, from Sigma Japan. I think it was since last PMA 2006 where we talked about the new FourThirds system lenses and Sigma's future in the digital SLR market. At this Photokina Sigma unveiled some very interesting products, and this time those are not only lenses. We took some time to set up a Q&A session at the booth from Sigma, and asked Kazuto Yamaki about Sigma's new digital SLR camera; the Sigma SD14 and their interesting DP1 high-end digital compact camera. Both cameras are of high interested among our readers. Unfortunately we have to wait for some time to get our hands on a full production model of the DP1 camera.

Apple Aperture 1.5

Apple, who was noticeably well visited in general, introduced a new version of Aperture at its press meeting: Apple Aperture 1.5. Most of us had expected Apple to come up with a new update, but were not sure about what exactly would be improved or renewed. What was remarkable was the seamless integration with iLife '06 and iWork '06, giving permanent direct access to pictures. There was also support for XMP meta data and an integrated export-API, with which Aperture workflow can be extended with programs and applications from other manufacturers. During the Photokina there were demonstrations of all sorts of plug-ins from leading companies, including Getty Images, iStockphoto, Pictage, Flickr, PhotoShelter, DigitalFusion, Soundslides en Connected Flow. These plug-ins offer a series of print, publication and storage workflows that use this new architecture.

At the Photokina 2006 there were not that many surprises in way of digital camera introductions. The last couple of years we have seen several big names disappearing from the digital imaging market or merged with other manufacturers. One well-known name in the world of photography is Agfa. It is therefore quite nice to see the rebirth of this brand with a new series of digital cameras.

During our meeting with Kazuto Yamaki, Chief Operating Officer, from Sigma Japan, I had the opportunity to touch and try the new Sigma DP digital compact camera. Although the status of the Sigma DP1 is pre-pre-pre-production, in the words of Kazuto Yamaki, we can already share our thoughts with you based on this model. The Sigma DP1 is compact and is basically similar to ordinary compact camera models. However the big difference between an ordinary compact camera and the Sigma DP1 is its image sensor.

Personally I found the huge booth of Fujifilm was a big success as to explaining the visitor the advantages of a Fujifilm digital camera and why you just need to have one. Fujifilm has several divisions targeting a diverse range of market segments; medical imaging, professional graphic arts, professional and amateur consumer photography, and more. And it is impressive to see how one manufacturer like Canon is able to offer so many solutions to photographing, printing, scanning, storing, sharing, etc. Canon's series of digital cameras, especially their Digital IXUS line-up, is very popular. Some weeks ago we were invited to come to London where Canon celebrated ten years of IXUS.
Although not officially presented at the Photokina 2006 I was demonstrated a new Fujifilm MP-300 mobile printer. The Fujifilm MP300 printer is a compact portable printer you can take with you anywhere, making it easy for you to print out photos from your digital camera or camera phone. It is PictBridge compatible so you will be able to connect your digital camera or mobile phone via the USB cable to the Fujifilm MP-300. More interesting is the support of high-speed infrared communication. You can send images at high speed directly to the Fujifilm MP-300 from a digital camera or camera phone that supports the high-speed infrared communications standard. Such a digital camera is the new Fujifilm FinePix F31fd which supports high-speed infrared communication.

Of course events like the Photokina are the perfect place to showcase the lens assortment. Since the digital SLR camera raise in popularity the market for lenses is booming again. The EF lens mount revolutionised SLR photography in 1987 by replacing mechanical links between camera and lens with electronic contacts and providing for an internal auto focus motor. Even with continued development and evolution of focus systems, Image Stabilizer technologies, lens element materials science, weather sealing and design, the EF mount remains consistent.

Olympus to develop wooden camera?

Olympus announces the development of a three dimensional compression moulding process for wooden materials. The new process draws extensively on Olympus expertise in precision metal-forming technologies. The processed wooden material has the feel and grain pattern of natural wood, but is much harder than engineering plastics such as ABS and polycarbonate resins. Strong enough to be used to create the outer casings of electronic products, the material can enhance the aesthetic value and pleasure of ownership that those products provide. A prototype example of a camera case created using this new technology will be exhibited at the photokina 2006, being held in Cologne, Germany.
